“Obey Your Leaders . . . As Those Who Will Give an Account”

Prepared by Patrick J. Griffiths © - pastorpat@waukeshabible.org
November 4, 2007
Take note of what is being said in the following Scripture passages:

“Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20:28).

11 “For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,
13 each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work.
14 If any man's work which he has built on it remains,he will receive a reward.
15 If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire” (1 Cor. 3:11-15).

12 “But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction,
13 and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13).

“Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith” (Heb. 13:7).

“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you”
(Heb. 13:17).

1 “Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed,
2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;
3 nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.
4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory” (1 Pet. 5:1-4).

Those who minister as elders will give an account to the Lord for those entrusted to them. This is the direct teaching of 1 Corinthians 3 and Hebrews 13:17. Because elders will give an account to the Lord for those entrusted to them, the sheep are exhorted to obey the shepherd-leaders and to make the ministry entrusted and joy and not grievous. This is a heavy weight and grave responsibility. There are several significant features to the references cited.

First, elders are appointed by God as overseers (Acts 20:28; 1 Pet. 5:1-4).

The weight behind the office is through the appointment by the Holy Spirit. Those who are servant-leaders have an invested authority that is not intrinsic to the individual, but to the position of elder.
It is important to note this because many treat the office as something to be won by popularity or vocational success, but the office is to be occupied by those whom the Holy Spirit appoints.
This assumes such an appointment is discernable by those within the office and by the office as something to be won by popularity or vocational success, but the office is to be occupied by those whom the Holy Spirit appoints. This assumes such an appointment is discernible by those within the office and by the congregation.

Second, elders have a distinct role in the local church (Acts 20:28; 1 Cor. 3).

The ministry entrusted to elders is narrow, centered on the Word, prayer, and oversight. A Word-centered ministry finds its expression in the Bible. What place the Scripture has in any local church should be non-negotiable. This demands an appetite for the Word and the ability to teach the Word. A prayer-exercising ministry is one of supplication in behalf of the congregation. This demands that the elders are aware of the sheep and their needs. A ministry of oversight is one of guardianship. As overseers, the shepherds are to guard or protect the health of the sheep. This deals exclusively with soul-care. The shepherds must know the state
of the sheep. This requires engagement.

Third, the work of the shepherds will be evaluated as to its temporal or eternal nature (1 Cor. 3).

If the sheep perish, then the shepherd will not receive a reward. First Corinthians teaches that an eternal work is built on the message of Christ-crucified. Any other message will produce a congregation of flammable materials. It would be a grievous error to labor for a lifetime only to have produced a congregation of unbelief.

Fourth, the ministry of shepherding is to be marked by joy (Heb. 13:17).

When the church is healthy, then ministering to the sheep is a joy. When it is unhealthy, then shepherding is grievous.

Fifth, elders must be blameless in their attitudes and in their conduct (1 Pet. 5:1-4; 1 Tim. 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-16).

The office of elder must not be used for personal advancement or gain. The office of elder, that of the shepherd-leader, is marked by a selfless spirit, one in which the well-being of the sheep takes precedence over the comforts of the shepherd.

Sixth, elders are to be obeyed and submitted to by the sheep (Heb. 13:17).

In a culture that rebels against anything and anyone who exercises any authority, this becomes problematic. Sheep are not provided with options or alternatives. This is a strong reason for local church ministry and responsibilities. Some sheep almost refuse to align themselves to any local church, thereby circumventing any accountability to any local fellowship and its leadership. This is wrong, and it is sin. It is this attitude that has produced an anaemic church, where ideas of commitment and loyalty and responsibility are unheard of.

Making it Personal (What is the NEXT STEP? Let us get real practical)
1. As an elder, if you do not measure up, then step off.
2. As a congregant, join the church, do right, and make shepherding easy. Obey and submit to your elders as in the Lord

New world

My vice precident once told me about new world.

In that time we were about to have a meeting to customer to introduce them with a new concept that my company adopt. A lot of people didnt agree with this concept. People talked from the back. People hard to accept change. New concept means new thing to do. We need to work harder in order to introduce it and to make the people to be familirise themselves with the new things. Well, it's really hard for him as a leader to convince the people that he is leading them to a new world.

He shared with me how moses lead the israelite to the promise land. How was the reaction of the people. They always think about how good their life in the past. They cant see that a new world, God give it to them.
So he challenged me, there will be a new world, who will enter it? Those people that have faith towards it. Dont be like the israelite where they cant enter the new world because they were grumble and gone againts it.
And he told me be a joshua generation who take courage toward changes.

Well, I really amaze by what he shared to me. It is not only imparting my career life but my entire life to perceive changes.

A new world that God have prepared. Do i want to enter it?

Desperate Housewife

I love to watch Desperate Housewife. From all the actresses, I think i can identify myself with Lynette. She like to control her family, and sometime she cant let her husband to lead her. Her past follow her till she married and have kids. She have fear that if she dont control it, her family will be ruin or she dont want her husband to take a silly decision.
Well, i like to take control. I have fear that if i dont take control, i will regret Yup, I know that i have to conquer this fear. Because i believe that God is the one take control over my life.

in the Season 6 episode 24, i can learn a lot of think from different person in this series.

1. Bree
Bree is a great Mom. As what a mother will do their kids, that she do to her kids. She protects andrew from taking responsibility of killed Carlos's Mom. through an accident few years back, when andrew still young, he drove a car and hit Carlos's mom.
Orson, her husband doesnt agree with Bree not to let andrew to take responsible when now he is adult. and he mentioned to Bree that she is compromising with her believe and become hypocrite. Bree believes that in life you have to do right things and she is a religious woman. Bree tried to excuse that she have no other choice but protect andrew. but Orson made a good statement where he said that she have a choice whether want to let andrew to learn to take responsibility. And Orson choose to break up with Bree because she is no the Bree that he knows.
In the end of the episode, Bree take courage and choose to stand again with her believe. She chose to talk to Gaby (Carlos's wife) about the accident.

2. Eddie and Lynette
Eddie is from a broken family. He thirst of motherly love. He felt that her mother ignored him and do not want him. and many times that he is trapped with the kindness of a woman. He becomes violence. Lynette who has the same past as him that she came from a family where the mother also dunk everyday, understand Eddie's feeling.
Lynette welcome Eddie into her house and be a part in her family. She tries to help Eddie to gain back his confident.
Eddie had killed so many woman in Fairview. and in the end Lynette find out that Eddie killed his mom. Eddie cant let Lynette tell police about what his criminal. in the climax, Lynette water broke. and Eddie helps her to give birth. Eddie plan to run away after helping Lynette. But Lynette challenges him to take responsibility over what he did. And Lynette told Eddie that he is her son also and it will make her proud of him .
Acceptance, Love, Approval, that's all what Eddie needs. So he surrender himself and admit to police.

3. Gaby
Gaby knows Angie not long ago. And even she had some clashes with Angie. Gaby's life is full of secret because she doesnt want to lose to anyone. Somehow, she found that Angie's life is full of secret also. that makes the two of them become friend. After Angie confess her secret to Gaby, Gaby promised her that she will help her all the way for whatever it may take.
So when Patrick found Angie house and try to kill her and Danny, Gaby really go all the way to help Angie. She even risk her life.

So, what are those things that i can learn from this 3 incident?
1. Compromising and Responsibility
because we fell that we have a good reason, our tendency is to compromise with what we believe or even to compromise with what God tough us to do. and where in the end we lose our identity. we take over His role. and in the end Andrew cant grow up in taking his responsibility over his life. and its spoiled him.

2. Life is full of choice
Everyday we need to decide which choice that we choose. what to eat, where to go, with who you want to go, what time you want to sleep, and so on.
So what is your choice today? is it the right things to do?

3. Do right thing
as what happen to Bree and Eddie, they made mistake before in chose to do wrong things. But you can to choose to do right things right now. Dont do wrong things to cover wrong things.
Anythings that you need to do right now in order to turn from your wrong choice?
Someone will rebuke you in order to make you realize that you have to change.

4. Friendship
I'm impressed by what Gaby did to Angie. Where she really treasure Angie as her friend. Well sacrifices are needed in friendship. Love without action is death. So if you want to have a strong friendship, you have to base it on love and do action on it.

In this story, its really reflect our daily life. how we perceive your neighbors or how your life only base on people opinion. I believe when you really take note on the people's character in this story, you can identify yourself. Which role can you identify yourself?
